SLC Half Marathon

I did it! 13.1 miles of which I feared I'd pass out/trip on the asphalt/etc. at some point along the way. I have to say it was so much fun; Salt Lake put together an amazing event. 6,000 runners total, complete with Big Mama's black gospel choir at the starting line (singing inspirational music to get us amped up), music and cheer stations all along the route, and the last 1/2 mile running through the Gateway Mall with hundreds of people and bands there to cheer us on. The best part of the day was Mitch biking up to see me off at the start, then biking all around the city to the designated cheering spots to cheer for me and take pics. Nothing like hearing someone screaming your name when you've hit a slow spot!

Worst parts of the run: getting passed by speed walkers (keep in mind I was running!), getting passed by 70-year-old women and very large old men, and getting passed on mile 11 by the Kenyans who were running the FULL marathon! We calculated their final times--they were running 5 minute miles, me 11 minute miles, so it makes sense that they would pass but still makes you feel awful. Have you ever been lapped in a half marathon?!

Good work!! :) I'm so proud of you!

I am doing one in (cross your fingers) September. But it is a trail run, so I am really nervous. I'll probably break my ankle.

Shannon! Great job! I'm so impressed! I run one lap and I already feel like I've run a half marathon!

Congratulations! It really is so annoying when the walkers are beating you. We had that issue too. I have to say though that I was in SLC yesterday and due to this wonderful event I spent way more time in traffic than I ever planned on and was barricaded all over the place. I was not a happy camper. However, I am glad it went so well for you.

Shannon,

I am totally impressed! I've talked about doing a half marathon for a while now, but have never really gotten serious about it yet. Thanks for the motivation!

Okay, so I found you through a friend of a friend of a friend...but I didn't feel like too much of a blogstalker since once upon a time we knew each other. We're facebook friends, surely that counts for something!:) I just wanted to say hi, and congratulate you on your 1/2 marathon, and let you know I'm going to add you as a friend, so I can see what you're up to now and then. Looks like things are going well--fun to catch up!
