Emerson’s 2nd Bday Party

This year we decided that we’d just invite some of Emerson’s kid-friends to his little party. He is old enough to know his friends, and we figured his birthday should be about him and what he likes. I made cupcakes, we blew up dozens of balloons, got a bunch of Cars themed snacks and favors, and basically just let the kids run wild! It was complete pandemonium. The craziest part of the party was gift-opening time—all the kids were attacking me and Emerson for the gifts as I helped him open presents! It made me realize that we shouldn’t have friends bring gifts in the future. We’d already gotten him a couple gifts and all the other presents did was make the kids there jealous. I really didn’t like that feeling.  The kids, however, had fun with basically a bunch of balloons and some Cars Juicy Juice boxes.
I made these little invites to send out to his friends.

Also, we reminisced about the song "It's my Party and I'll Cry if I want to" when all the kids started trying to take Emerson's gifts and he threw a bit of a tantrum. Like I said--I really don't think gifts are a good idea in front of other kids anymore! But really, it was his party and he did cry for a couple minutes.

So overall, was the Cars theme a little tacky? Probably. Did I always tell myself I'd never throw a character themed party for my child? Yes. Did Emerson love it? Definitely.

The only thing that would have made the party better would have been a Cars fun jump in your living room. Just sayin.... ;)

Happy Birthday E!

I love the idea of no gifts. I felt that way for Eliot's birthday. Can't you just come over to celebrate without bringing us a gift.

Next year I'll know better.

Looks like a fun birthday party! I can't believe he is two. I think he and Landon would be great buddies if we lived close.

Happy Birthday Emerson!
I agree with themed parties. I was always against them and thought they were tacky before I had kids, but I think I jinxed myself because audrey is having a Princess party since she is obsessed with all the Disney princesses. So tacky! But they love it so what can you do!! It looks like you threw a wonderful party as always!!

You are brave to have a friends party! It looks like a blast. Happy Birthday Emerson. Isn't it funny how as a parent you do things you never thought you would, just because you know it will make your kid so happy?!

Umm I think my crazy child was the only one trying to steal all of the presents and throwing a tantrum :) It was a fantastic party!
