While we are of course extremely excited for another child to come to our family, this was the first time I found out I was pregnant and was actually 100% scared. I was thrilled to find out but felt like, oh no I really hope I can be a good mom to 3 kids so close in age. People always say you figure it out, but I don’t want to just figure it out! I want to be a good mom, which is increasingly tough the more children you have.
However, I do also believe it is so good for kids to have siblings. There is no better way for children to learn how to share—to share things, to share mom and dad’s time, and to share attention. I also think it has already taught Emerson so much about caring and loving for someone, to have Genevieve so close to him. He always helps me with her and sings to her when she’s sad, he gets toys for her and food for her, and they play together all the time. I honestly feel like having two close together was one of the best things we’ve ever done, and I’m just praying I feel that way about having #3 close as well.
Our first two are 20 months apart and these 2 and 3 will be 21 months. We have never been so excited and scared all at once!
I took a test one day while Mitch was at work. I didn’t want to deliver the news to him over the phone while he was stressed about work projects, so I decided to wait until FHE that evening. I went to the cutest little cupcake shop in Maple Grove and put in a special order. They added writing to the tops of the cupcakes to say: Mitch, Shannon, Emerson, Genevieve, Baby #3.
It was so hard not telling Mitch when he got home from work. We had dinner as usual, cleaned up, and then had FHE. I told Mitch we had a special treat for FHE and brought out the cupcakes for everyone. At first he said, “oh that’s so cool they put our names on them,” but didn’t notice the last cupcake that said “Baby #3.” I said, “yeah, what do they say?” He read them and lit up—“Are you serious?!!” He shouted. We thought for sure I wasn’t pregnant that month because I’d been feeling so crampy, so he said he’d written it off. It made the news so exciting! To be honest I was shocked too. Emerson shouted: baby in mommy’s tummy! It was a really fun night together as a family.
To tell our parents we recorded a video of Emerson saying, “There’s a baby in mommy’s tummy!” I tried to upload it here but the volume for some reason is really low. Dang! I'm not good at putting videos on the blog. It’s really short but cute.
More to come soon on how sick I’ve been and other updates. Why can’t I just be one of those women who doesn’t get sick? (You know who you are!)

I think you are the most darling woman I know! What a great idea. Glad you could all celebrate and break the news with a sweet treat :)
You will be an excellent mother to three. I often think about my grandma who raised nine children on a blue collar salary as a stay-at-home-mom. She did it so well!
E and G will be great older siblings.
On another note (haha) I do believe you should add a "Minnesota" bracket to your side and put in your MN blogging buddies. You know who we are ;)
Congratulations! You're such a great momma, I really admire that about you.
I love how Mitch didn't even notice at first, typical dudes :)
That is so fun to surprise Mitch! I never have the patience. Your family is wonderful, and because you are striving to be a good mom, you will continue to be with #3!
What a fun story! I have every confidence that you will be the most amazing, caring, loving, and organized mother ever. I hope you start feeling better soon, though.
Love it and I'm feeling you with the sickness thing. I have super jealousy issues with my friends that don't get sick, but at the same time, it is nice to have some comrades in the sickness department. Sorry that means you.
Cupcakes! You are fun. I just gave Jason the test stick. Both times. Another cue of how to be awesome like you. Luckiest babies to have you!
