What are we eating?

I love learning about food, albeit most of the time it makes me infuriated to learn about what’s allowed in food production and how our country eats. This weekend we watched King Corn, a documentary about the corn industry and the pervasiveness of corn in most diets: corn syrup, corn starch, corn oil, corn flour, corn feed, etc. The film follows two recent college grads attempting to grown their own acre of corn and learn about its uses, starting off with the distressing notion that we will be the first generation not to outlive our parents. The film discusses the farming, government subsidies, and the effects to corn-fed animals, including ulcers and an almost 10-times saturated fat content from that of grass-fed animals. The corn industry explosion mirrored the country’s explosion of cheap food, which is in turn causing us to live shorter, unhealthy lives. The film is done with a non-in-your-face style like some other famous documentarians we’ve seen… it is a must see.

Right after I read your post, I went and got the mail and in the mail was the new Ensign with an article on nutrition & the word of wisdom. Random, right?! But the article was good. Pretty basic, but good.

I loved this film. It's scary thinking about how much manufactured corn is getting in our food. Makes me want to look into grass fed beef for sure!

I can see where your concerns lie, however, for someone like me, corn is one of my top choices for consumption. Granted, I shouldn't eat corn syrup, but my intolerance to gluten (everything with wheat, barley and rye and contaminated oats) makes it difficult to stay away from corn. That is interesting about the cows that are fed corn compared to the cows that are fed grass. Thanks for sharing!

based on your recommendation i suggested it to lots of family members (we have a ton of vegans in my extended family--wackos! haha j/k), b/c i figured it'd be right up their ally (although one less thing they can eat)...i haven't seen it yet, but i want to now that i've passed the recommendation on to everyone.

and thanks for the banana bread recipe! xoxo
