Blogging and the Business World

One of the main reasons I wanted to go private was for business concerns... we work with many of our national clients over the phone, many of whom I have never met. A couple weeks ago I was google-ing some of these people to get some info about them, check out their LinkedIn profile, etc. and I realized they might just being doing the same thing with me.

This reminded me of a job interview I had last year at another ad agency in town. I walked in to meet with the CEO, sat down and starting chatting about some personal things, where I'm from, my interests, etc. After a minute of this, he broke in and said, "So, your husband is in the BYU Construction Management program? And you guys might be moving next year?"

"Uhm, yes actually, how did you know all that?" I remember asking confused and taken back.

"Oh we had our intern look you up. And we found your blog. So you had a nice trip to Europe last summer I saw..."

WOW, whhat?! Creepy. I remember feeling so violated! Since then I have definitely been more careful about what I've posted (didn't want to get Dooced like the famous Heather Armstrong who was fired for negative blogging about her then-employer).

Perhaps now that we are private I can fulfull my dream of venting all my frustrations about horribly stressful days at work and interesting co-worker interactions...

Haha. That story is so creepy! I don't want some future employer knowing I use to be fat.

Thanks for the invite!

same kind of thing happened to jason. his industry is really low-key, under the radar. no websites, no news articles, etc.

so one day, jason's boss calls him into his office to talk. jason sits down and his boss turns around his computer monitor with our blog page up. i guess they were interviewing some guy and when he googled the company name, our blog came up. his boss asked if we could not mention the company name there because he doesn't want people finding out info (its not shady, promise!). luckily we never said anything bad about his work or boss, but when you post you don't really expect other people to be reading it, i guess.

Kinda creepy.

Wait!! NOW I see the plus of NOT going private... If I talk about my calling enough in a negative way maybe my bishop will find out and call me in and "fire" me! ;) OR it just keeps me on my toes of what I should or shouldn't say or NOT. You gotta do what's best for you.

BTW...I actually love my calling, primary is THE BEST cause kids say the funniest stuff.
