Ups & Downs

Lately I can't help but feel overwhelming emotion for the joys and sorrows of life. We are placed here to experience pain as well as joy, but I've recently found the two emotions sandwiched so close together it can be hard to process.

On Friday we watched nervously to see how Hurricane Ike would affect my sister and her family, praying for their safety. They are thankfully okay with the exception of some minor damage to their home. They told us the story of the evening--the house was shaking all night until about 5am when it got really quiet for a half hour. My brother-in-law said it was so eerie, because they knew the eye was over them. The storm soon started up again...

This is the bed setup they devised... to sleep in the master bedroom closet where no windows could break.

On Saturday Mitch finally received his diploma in the mail; I'm so proud of him!

Our house is going up quickly...

On Saturday some great friends who we've missed terribly came in from SF.

On Sunday we learned of the passing of Harold Lefrandt, an amazing man who lived his life serving his family and the gospel. He (and the wonderful Lefrandt family) was one of the main reasons my sister and I joined the church and stayed in it; thanks to them for taking us in as surrogate children and helping our gospel knowledge and testimonies. It is hard to know how to attempt to repay someone for that. Here's a picture with his wonderful and lovely wife Diane.

SO sorry to hear about Jon's dad. My pass my condolences onto Jon. I know you were close with their family & it must be tough for you. I am sorry.

On a lighter note, though - having you been tanning? You look dark in those photos. Really great, but definitely tan.

I was thinking about your sister on Friday! I'm glad they made it through with relatively little damage. And I'm also really sorry to hear about the passing of Harold Lefrandt. I know they've meant a lot to you.

And ditto to Elise. You're definitely looking really tan :)

Brother Lefrandt lived in my home ward--he was my family's home teacher. It was really sad to see him pass away. I'm sorry it affected you too.

I got chills when you described the silence of the eye over them! Thank goodness they made it through safe. I'm sorry to hear about your loss, it's always hard when someone close passes. Thank goodness for the understanding we have as Latter-day Saints of our eternal nature. You will see him again!

Thanks for the well wishes.

And the tan is courtesy of Salt Lake's Steiner pool! Gotta love living in the city and PAYING to go use the pool :)

Hey, Shannon! I have not seen you in forever. You have had a lot going on lately-- ups and downs. I am glad to see that you're always upbeat and moving forward. Your new townhome is going to be POSH! :) I am excited to see it when it's done! I hope we get to run into you soon!
