Sewing Projects

In my whole life I’ve probably only sewn 4 – 5 things (an apron for Home Ec., a pillow, and a couple of blankets). Over the past couple of weeks I’ve decided it’s time to put my dusty sewing machine to use and teach myself how to make some things. My stitches are horribly un-straight and I can’t cut very well, but thanks to some sewing blogs and online advice, I’ve been able to fumble through a couple projects.

Last week I made this nursing cover. I really wanted to learn how because they’re great gifts; I loved the cover my friend Laura made for me when I was pregnant. It is the kind of gift you use every day. I figured I better test out my abilities before I committed to giving them as gifts to other people. I really love the fabric (I think it’s the only reason I love the end result so much because the stitches are all pretty uneven).

Hand stitching is fun and relaxing. My good friend Elise is due in September and unlike any impatient pregnant women I’ve ever met, she is waiting to find out the gender until the baby comes! (Something I am in awe of.) So I made this with the initial of their last name. Green is a gender neutral color, right?

Several of my friends make headbands that I love to wear (and admire). I’m not very good at making these (I had to re-do it a couple times), but it’s fun to wear something that you put work into. I think this will be my first and last headband; other people just do it better. But it was fun to try.

In addition to these things I’ve taken in a dress, hemmed some things, taken in a collared shirt, and fixed some of Mtich’s clothes. I figure the way to get better is to just try it out. I’m hoping I can improve as I make more things.

Good work! Seriously. Obviously you know how I feel about the onesie. But I am impressed you have done all those other things, too.

Sewing is on my list of things to do now that I am done working. I am starting with curtains. Easy enough, right?

Your hooter hider looks great! I agree a great gift and very useful but honestly these days it's just Matthew and I when I march to the mother's lounge. No frills just getting down to business when it comes to eating. Keep up the good work!!!

You are amazing! I love the fabric you chose for the nursing cover. And what a cute idea to hand stitch their initial. Where do you find the time?! Supermom, I swear...
