Yesterday was Mitch’s 27th bday. Being an adult is really not fun when you have to work all day on your birthday. Mitch had to work so we celebrated in the morning and then again at night. I’d been scheming all week on his surprise dinner, so I was frantically getting everything ready hoping he wouldn’t find out.
Here he is in the morning with his breakfast and gifts just before work.
After work I told we had reservations at one of his SugarHouse BBQ, one of his favorite restaurants. I think he was wondering why we needed reservations on a Thursday night, so I told him they got really crowded on Thurs because it’s band/jazz night. I think he bought it… really I had about 25 of our friends waiting at the restaurant to surprise him when we arrived. He had no idea!
Surprise!
When dinner was wrapping up, I snuck back and got the cake I’d made and brought to the restaurant earlier that day; they were nice enough to store it in their fridge for me. I thought a Dodger cake was fitting for my baseball nut husband. The jazz band even played happy birthday for him, which was great because I cannot sing to save my life.
Mitch doesn’t like a lot of frosting, so I only used buttercream on top and made a raspberry filling for the inside layers. I think I’ll make all cakes like this from now on—it was a great way to break up the creamy taste of frosting (also cuts down on the fat a little bit, but I guess if you’re eating cake for your husband’s bday it shouldn’t count anyway).
I just have to say that dying fondant is the most miserable thing I’ve ever done in the kitchen. MISERABLE. My hands and arms were covered in blue dye, it took about 40 minutes to get enough dye in for a real blue color, the counter was covered in dye, and I had to knead the color through that whole time to get it even. Miserable. I spent the afternoon bleaching and scrubbing the kitchen so Mitch wouldn’t notice what I’d been doing.
Lastly, Mitch had really been wanting to see Inception, so some of our friends came to babysit after dinner. It’s rare that we get to the movies anymore, so it was fun to have a date. Happy birthday Mitch!

You are such a good wife! How fun to be surprised and eat delicious cake. You are seriously so talented. What did you think of the movie? We loved it!
That cake looks SO good. I seriously have a list of things that I can't wait to bake once we have an oven. (Three or four different) cakes top that list.
Happy Birthday to Mitch!
Incredible cake - I am really so impressed. I don't think I could ever do something like that, complete with realistic logo. Wow! Mitch is lucky.

You did such a good job for his birthday! I need to start planning NOW for Allen's (in Nov.) if I want to think up something like that. :) Seriously so impressed with you and your skills. You're so fun!! I also wish we were neighbors!!
