Sundays are a hard day for me. Not only is Emerson’s schedule totally off (eating and sleeping), but Mitch is gone for usually 9-10 hours for church. Last Sunday he was gone from 7:30am – 7pm. It was a really lonely day for me and I found myself getting really emotional; I was crying for what I thought was no reason but I really missed Mitch. When Mitch got home and saw my eyes I think he thought something really bad had happened to me or Emerson, but no I'm just a wimp. I always try to keep busy by reading with Emerson, taking E on walks, talking to friends and family on the phone, and cooking/cleaning, but on the weekends I find myself getting protective of my Mitch time!
Cooking has always been one of my favorite hobbies (I told Mitch if I didn’t get into my graduate program I was going to go to cooking school; I still dream of it, but don’t know if I could handle the meats section), and keeps me distracted on Sunday. Last Sunday I experimented with Ina Garten’s Sour Cream Coffee Cake. I altered the recipe a little (added cinnamon to the batter and glaze, doubled the streusel, substituted low-fat yogurt for sour cream), and it was honestly the best coffee cake we’d ever had. Make this today, really. You will die it’s so good.
Today I’m making our favorite French Peasant Bread. My sister gave me the recipe a couple months ago and we cannot get enough of it.
And of course there’s always this little guy to cheer me up.

Ok that last picture of your little guy is to die for CUTE! I love the polo shirt, ah!
Why is Mitch gone so much?? Studying? Church? I feel your pain. Sunday is definitely my hardest day too w/Dave gone. Church is super stressful w/the kiddos and I can't imagine when Gaines starts walking and is in the phase of not being able to sit still during church..at all and Dave not being there. I might drop out, ha. I think Mom's need about 4 mothers days during the year, haha.
This is so weird...I thought I had your blog on my "blog list" but it wasn't there! So basically, I've been missing out on your blog for months. It's so cute! And I really want your bread recipe. Thanks again for the coffee cake, oh my gosh it was amazing!
I'm glad we talked yesterday. New Sunday tradition, okay?! And if you want a project, figure out a way to make & ship both that bread & the coffee cake (while still maintaining freshness, of course) to me. You know, since I don't have an oven...
:)
look at that cake! you are so amazing! you are inspiring me!
I know EXACTLY what you mean about Sundays. Steve's gone all day. I'm usually sweating by the time I get to church after getting two kids presentable and in the church. I totally commiserate. And NO, you are NOT a wimp.
I love Ina' recipes. That looks so tasty. I wish I had some right now!
Shan - you should call me at times like that, because it's more than likely that I'm feeling the same way! :) I'm very excited to hang-out more once you get back from your trip!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like Sundays are the hardest day. I always feel a bit cynical when people say it's their favorite day of the week. We need to chat next Sunday!
P.S. LOVE the french peasant loaf. Someday when I visit you can make it and we'll eat it how we used to--me the crust, you the inside. Miss you!
That cake looks amazing. I'm a wimp every Sunday too. Cameron was called to serve in the Chinese branch a year ago so I have to go to church alone and I get all pouty too. But 7 to 7 is insane! Church is too demanding sometimes. There, I said it!
Okay, I have a deal...you teach me how to cook (no lie, I was just looking up "free cooking classes, Utah" today), and I will give you piano lessons.
