This has been our first full winter here and I have to say March has been the roughest month. At this time you’re really craving some warmth and spring just hasn’t come! Yesterday it was 10 degrees. Monday was the first day I’ve ever cried because of the weather. I was out getting some things for Activity Days and it was so cold my kids were almost in tears. The wind chill was almost unbearable and kept blowing the car door and stroller. Emerson has been begging to go to the pool, the baseball stadium, and the beach. I keep telling him when the snow melts, but really it’s all still around. I’ve never been that affected by weather but when you have small children it really makes a difference in their lives.
Growing up in Seattle we’d have years with 100 straight days of rain, or in Utah snow storms in the winter and hot summers, but during those times in my life I was just always going to school or work so the weather didn’t affect me much. The kids need sun and warmth to play outside! E loves playing in the snow but it’s so cold here he doesn’t last long. And Genevieve can’t stand the snow.
I haven’t been great about documenting things because: 1) I have two toddlers, 2) I’m hugely pregnant, 3) my business has been really busy this year, and 4) I’m tired! I’m trying to remember some things from this winter for the blog.
This winter we’ve tried to keep busy despite the freezing temperatures. We love our play dates with friends, weekly library trips for story time and to pick out new books, going to the gym, playing inside around the house and trying to makeup new games when we go stir crazy, the children’s museum is still a lifesaver, and definitely having lots of family time. It’s also been baby season and we’ve loved showering and welcoming lots of friends’ babies! It’s definitely making us excited for our little boy to arrive. Emerson loves his preschool and gets so excited to go every week. His best friend is in his class and they have a blast together. This also gives them some fun outdoor snow play time each week.
Here are some snippets from the winter:
Lots of fort building and pillow fights
We love having French toast or pancakes on the weekends.
Library time! The kids love picking out books each week. We always make a list of things we want to find and see if we can – i.e. rocket books, dinosaur book, Fancy Nancy, etc.
Many girls’ nights out for shopping and monstrous desserts to cope with the winter.
I estimate I’ve made 700 of these in my life:
Cleaning! The best thing ever that my kids (try to) help me.
Making lots of treats (too many for sure!)
Attacking daddy:
Church! (E gave his first talk in Primary on Sunday… He did so well.)
These cuties are helping me get through this winter. Love them to pieces.
Please let winter be over. I’m going into a funk.

Blah... I can't imagine. This has been a long winter here too, but we have finally had some relief. My friend in Phoenix says September is the hardest month there, because everywhere else is getting some cooler days finally and they are still super hot. It looks like March is that way for you guys, but cold. The blankets are super cute. I love the green one with anchors. Good luck getting through till warmer days.
I couldn't agree more. We've had more snow in March than we did in December and I am over it!
1'?! Wind blowing your door shut?! Goodness Shan! You are amazing to deal with that and only have cried once! Glad you have lots of sun indoor activities & this spring will be the best yet!
I.hear. you!! I am ready to go NUTS!! Nuts I tell ya! Last March was amazing weather. I remember thinking last year, "I don't' know what people are talking about, this winter wasn't that bad." But this winter, this March, is the worst. March is the make it or break it month. If March is good, then life is good. If March is freezing cold, then you are depressed. The sun came out the other morning for like half an hour and I could not believe how my mood changed. I felt amazing and started cleaning my house with every window blind open letting the beautiful sunshine in. I cleaned my whole house. But then it went away and I was depressed again, lol. Here's to hoping Easter will bring warmer weather!
You are handling it better than I would. You still get out and do fun things with your kids! Those baby blankets are adorable. We're both counting down the days until sweet babies are here! I'm sending all the warm energy your way. Good luck!
March is always yucky. Maybe it's because I'm a native, but I actually love winter! It's a great time for me to focus on work, clean my apt and make to-do lists. I love to stay in, drink tea and have an excuse to curl up with a book.
One thing that usually helps: planning a trip somewhere warm between January-April. Makes a huge difference!
Hang in there!
I'm so sorry! Praying for sunshine & green to show up soon.
